DIY Guide - Wireless Networking
Are you tired of being trapped at your computer desk? Are you ready to go wireless? It’s easier than you think! Follow the steps below to get everything you need.
What you need:
Broadband internet connection (DSL or cable modem)
Can be obtained from your local phone or cable company.
Wireless Router
Converts the internet signal into a wireless broadcast. The range is approximately 300’ which can be boosted with an optional antenna.
Wireless-G Broadband Router
This is an all in one internet-sharing router, 4-port switch and wireless-G (802.11g) access point. It comes with a "one step setup" CD which makes configuration fast and easy. Mfr. #WRT54G. MCM recommends part #831-2055.
Wireless Network Adaptor
Connects your computer to your wireless router. (If you have a newer laptop computer, it may have wireless capabilities built-in, in which case you will not need a network adaptor.) You will need an adaptor for every computer on your network.
Laptop
Wireless-G Notebook Adaptor
Slide the adaptor into your notebook’s PC Card slot and enjoy network access. The included Setup Wizard walks you through configuration, step by step. MCM recommends part #831-2058.
Desktop
Wireless-G PCI Adaptor
Installs in most desktop computers for network access. The included Setup Wizard makes setup simple. MCM recommends part #831-2057.
Note: If desktop PCs will remain near the router, you can skip the adaptor and connect up to four PCs directly to the WRT54G router.
Laptop or Desktop
Wireless-G USB Network Adaptor
The easy way to connect your desktop or notebook to a wireless network. To install, simply plug the adaptor into any available USB port. MCM recommends part #831-2200.
