The DeoxIt Rosin Soldeing Flux permits soldering of even difficult metals such as brass or nickel.
It leaves a greasy residue on finished work if applied to the joint to be soldered. For that a rosin in alcohol flux may be preferable but I have found it good for tinning a soldering tip. Set the iron to a fairly low temperature such as 600 degrees F see that there is some solder on the tip then brush the tip on the edge of this paste or briefly immerse it. The tip will be evenly tinned with whatever solder you are using and the flux residue mostly evaporates.
I would recommend this to anyone - provides a good way for the solder to stick, and isn't too smokey.
