I got this to replace my old Weller soldering station. I managed to pick this up on sale and am not disappointed. The soldering iron heats up very quickly, the hot air rework does the job just as quickly. I have used the soldering iron quite a bit already and it is great. I would recommend picking up some additional tips for the soldering iron. Other than that, if it is your first rework station, go for it! You can't go wrong.

The soldering iron side heats up very quickly so I can get to work fast. The hot air heats up really quickly so I can take the chip off that I just soldered on with the index in the wrong corner. It only comes with one tip for the soldering iron. It works well, but you might want to get others if you want to do special things with it.

Let me start by saying this is a great "budget" rework station. I was really just looking to replace my old noisy pump hot air station with a new fan powered temperature controlled one... but this 2-in-1 model wasn't much more expensive than the hot air only station, so I went for it. I have a Pace soldering iron, so I have no expectation of replacing it with this, but there are times when it's nice to have two irons running on the workbench.

Functionally, everything works great. The hot air gives a well controlled (both temperature and air flow) stream of air, working great for installing and removing surface mount components, as well as simply shrinking heatshrink. It heats up very quickly (melts leaded solder in about 5 seconds from a cold start). The soldering iron is comfortable to use, and also heats up very quickly (melts leaded solder in about 15 seconds from a cold start), and seems to control the temperature well.

The controls are easy to use... it has a knob for air flow and buttons to set temperature. The display is nice, showing the set temperature (when you press buttons), and current temperature otherwise. It also saves the temperature settings when you turn it off. I haven't had any problems running both the hot air and soldering iron at the same time. The hot air unit has a nice feature where it goes to sleep when placed on the stand (keeps the fan running to cool the heater), and returns to the set temperature once you lift it from the stand.

Now, for the annoyances. First, there are two power switches on the front, one for hot air, the other for the soldering iron. But, with both off, the system is still on (display lit up). There is a main power switch to actually shut the whole system off, but it's on the back of the unit. So, if you like to have your workbench dark when everything is off, you'll need to reach to the back and turn it off. Also, the cords for both the soldering iron and hot air are pretty short (about 3 ft. long), so you can't have the main unit very far from where you're working. Another very minor annoyance is that the temperature settings step by 1 degree F, but the number you actually set it to usually gets changed. For example, if you set it to 701F, it changes the setting to 699F, but if you set it to 702F, it changes the setting to 701F. I assume it's actually working in C, and doesn't round in the conversion from F to C. Oh well.

I also have a few gripes on quality. First, related to the cords. They're definitely not flexible high temperature silicone cords like a lot of soldering stations have. They're kinda stiff, and if you hit them with the soldering iron, I'm sure they'll melt. Second, the soldering iron holder is made of plastic. There's a metal ring that actually holds the iron, and a small metal plate at the bottom, but the entire holder is very light. It also doesn't have rubber feet on the bottom, so combined with its light weight, it moves around very easily. The sponge is also really thin and way undersized compared to the spot given in the holder (I prefer a brass sponge anyway, so that doesn't really bother me). My last complaint is related to the hot air tips... unlike my old one, which used either a small set screw or a clamp to hold the tip to the nozzle, this one has tips that you twist a quarter turn to lock in place. It didn't go on very easily, and now after a few uses, the tip is stuck and won't come off. I suspect I'll need pliers to get it off of there. I'll probably use my old tips (like the ones shown in the "replacement nozzles" section) to avoid this in the future.

So overall, it really is a good rework station. If you're looking to make the step up from your cheap Radio Shack iron to a nice temperature controlled station, or get into using hot air, I wouldn't hesitate to buy this. Just be aware of the few shortcomings ahead of time, and you won't be disappointed.
