  I use these flush cutters for numerous tasks beyond wire cuts such as cable tie trims and jewelry beading where no other tool come close to meeting the need to cut close to the surface. The cushioned handles are very ergonomic and comfortable. The competition such as Plato and no names in craft stores aren't the equal to the Xcelite brand. Sometimes the very tips don't cut effectively so alignment of the jaws isn't perfect, thus some fancier Euro brands that are much costlier may be better for some applications but for my needs these under $10 cutters are great.

  A example of a shear cutter would be tin snips. The blades pass each other and the metal is cut smoothly. There is no axial shock. These FLUSH CUTTERS are intended pinch the metal till it fractures just before the blades would touch, sending shock waves in both directions down the wire. In the value for money rating I give value for the advertised purpose of shear cutting wire. It is like buying a Philips head screw driver and getting a hex nut driver. As a flush cutter, the blades are well aligned to give a flush cut but they only meet over a very small length so to cut a fine wire it must be positioned in this small area or it can be grasp by the cutter and torn.
