good when it works but unreliable

The good points are that the beam is uniform as the focus is changed over a wide range and if you use primary batteries, the LED driver is constant power over a wide range of battery voltages yet gives a small current to the LED before the batteries go dead. The down side of this when using batteries with a fairly constant output voltage is that poor contacts are mask, all you see is poor battery life and perhaps an abnormally warm part.
I purchased several of these about 3 years ago and am a light user. One failed due to moisture. Then measurements showed that the O-rings are purely decorative. I wrap Teflon tape on the threads that mate the lamp head to the battery tube, scraping anodize off the butting surfaces to maintain electrical contact and wrap vinyl tape around the tail cap to battery tube junction. The circuit board that mates the + battery terminal to the lamp head comes loose from it’s conical mount and is virtually impossible to reseat. This contributes to frequent flickering of the light. That is really bad because each flicker causes the light to change modes from bright to dim to bright strobe and back. It is helpful to wrap both batteries in a single layer of paper so they act as a single object. I have 3 bad tail switches, one LED head that is too dim to use, and one that in hot weather draws too much current- First current starts spiking to 1.9 amps then the spike length increases till there is a 1.9 amp continuous draw with no change in light output.

With Alkaline battery, measured this drawing 1 Amp!

In the main 2014 catalog 57, there is no mention of this flashlight being 3W. Probably I'm not current with LED flashlights, but anyway I assumed that because the light element is a LED, that the current drain would be much less than the about 1/2 amp that an incandescent bulb of the brighter flashlight might draw.

Usually a white LED has a voltage drop of 3.4V, so my measurement of a current of 1 Amp would calculate to 3.4W.

If you power this flashlight with an alkaline battery, you get less than 3 hours of service from the battery. Initially I was using an alkaline battery, but now I have NiMh cells in it, and it is still very bright despite the loss of 0.6V.

The problem with the flashlight switching modes when shaken, that someone else pointed out, I believe has to do with the threaded attachment of the lighting head to the barrel. If that attachment is not completely tight, then yes, shaking it will change the mode. If the head is screwed on tight to the barrel, then there isn't a problem.

This two AA design flashlight is nice. It is not as bright as the same bulb in the three AAA cell design model similar to this one, but the light output is sufficient. I bought several of these for gifts.

The light may be tough but just a little shake will change the light modes from high, low, pulse and back again! The switch design needs to be redesigned.

Could what you say? How about make it possible for me to see a half a block away! Or how about save me some money by having an unbeatable price and using only a small amount of power so my batteries last really long! I bought 12 of these and gave them to my coworkers that do tech work, all were impressed! Thanks MCM for another great product!

I put some batteries in this thing and turned it on, wow, it's like a headlamp on a car. Love the more compact design you get over multi-LED flashlights. I have a 28 LED flashlight and this one outshines it.

For the money, this is a great tool. Nice bright beam, easy to focus, solid construction. A whiter light than many of the LED lights.

Price rating is based on current $5.99 There are actually 2 light levels! It turns on at the highest level and a soft push to the switch gives the lower level. I have 2 and with fully charged NimH cells I get currents of 505/180 ma for one, 444/133 for the other. Actually this provides a regulated (constant) LED current for input voltages of 1.1 to 3 volts (don't exceed 3 volts, below 1.1 volts the battery can't provide the current) The box shows a "zoom dimmer" but there is none. The wide beam is 38.6 degrees which is fairly good, the narrow gives a image of the LED with a beam width of 4.3 degrees. It gives a unusually uniform beam pattern between these extremes. You will see from the photo that the head has pocket unfriendly notches but the head unscrews as a aluminum casting (no other parts) so it can be machined to a smooth edge. The knurling OD is .845", the barrel ID is .592" so I milled flats in the first knurled section. Wrapping vinyl tape around this makes it easier to hold in the mouth The The tail appears to have a O-ring seal but this is a gemic. There are 2 O-ring groves and one O-ring but it is not water tight. The quickest solution is to wrap vinyl tape around the tail cap to barrel junction after each battery change. I looked a bit closer: The tail cap ID is .842", the O-ring is .052W X .582" OD and the grove that is used has a diameter of .688" so it is a long way to a good seal. If the grove was cut to .667" dia X .144" W a -115 O-ring would give a loose fit, -114 would be a tight fit (might crack in time) but getting just 1 such O-ring is a problem. A similar problem exists at the seal between the barrel and the head. The head ID is .777" and the O-ring as mounted has a OD of .764". I folded some teflon thread sealing tape in half and rapped 2 turns over the O-ring and part of the threads. 8 layers of teflon tape won't fill the measured gap, so this will probably keep the rain out but it is not good enough for submersion.
