Distributed Audio Stereo Receiver
This receiver is perfect for music listening in any room of the home, with conventional left/right stereo output. What sets it apart is the existence of four amplifier channels instead of the traditional two, allowing up to four pairs of speakers to be directly driven from the receiver.
This receiver creates a self contained, two–zone distributed audio system, perfect for residential or small office background music applications. Up to four pairs of bookshelf, in–wall, in–ceiling or outdoor speakers may be driven directly from this unit, with independent selection of any or all pairs.

The receiver includes two independent source busses as well, allowing speaker pairs A and B to select from one source, while pairs C and D select from a separate source. This allows one part of the residence to be listening to (for example), the CD changer, while another area listens to the FM tuner.

MCM's Exact Spec won my business

    Overall: 5 out of 5

With many places to buy and several lower than MCM, I choose MCM because they were the only retailer to accurately list the specifications. Everyone else shows the output power as 100 watts RMS per channel at 8 ohms. That's just NOT true. At 8 ohms this unit is capable of 70 watts, but more importantly to me the unit can handle 4 ohm loads and at 4 ohms it is capable of 100 watts.

This is a big deal when you own power hungry 4 ohm speakers!

I received the RX-5502 yesterday and it has performed flawlessly. With true ease it drove my speakers with volume much higher than what I'd consider comfortable. As for heat, the output heat sink appeared to be cool (it's at the front). A couple of low voltage regulators appeared to be the source of heat and I've had problems with these before. These things run so hot they fry themselves, unsolder themselves, or fry nearby components. To avoid problems my recommendation is to turn the unit off. That is, avoid the "stand by" mode.

At present, I am using the "main room" amp. My plan is to use Room2 amp for bi-amping. It's a little "hokey" turning on the 2nd amp, but once on, it's very easy to control Room2 volume, source, tone and balance.

One pleasant surprise I discovered upon reading Sherwood's warranty is that the warranty period is a full 2 years!

    Great at first....

    Overall: 2 out of 5

The specifications are already listed, so I'll just get right to the point:

I bought this amp to play music in one single room, and hooked it up to two sets of satellite speakers (20w each) and a pair of Infinity towers (powered sub with passive main and tweeter) it did a great job of pushing all of them without distortion or excessive heat off the unit. It did this on a fairly regular basis for the better part of 3 years without any problems whatsoever, then suddenly one day while only playing music through the set of towers without the satellites, it burned up. With a one year warranty, they may as well not offer a warranty, and now I'm stuck replacing an amp that I expected to do the job for far longer than 3 years. Needless to say, stay away unless you're just looking for something to do the job for a short time.

    My review

    Overall: 4.5 out of 5

I chose this system because I wanted to run the three sets of floor speakers I have. I listen to heavy Rock music, loudly, and this system rattles the windows well. It does seem to take the upper end of the volume knob to get there though. It also completes the home entertainment system for movie watching experience. It allows me to "feel" the whole experience. And it didn't cost a thousand dollars either. Great sound at a low price.

    Unique product without competition

    Overall: 4 out of 5

This receiver is unique, it offers 4 amplifiers that can be used as a single zone or as two zones, the sound quality is very good and powerful for the price of this unit. It has outputs for four sets of stereo speakers, A and B for zone 1, plus C and D for zone 2, or you could use all four in zone 1. Good as it is, Sherwood could improve the ergonomics, both in the main panel and in the remote. There used to be a Marantz 3 zone amplifier (ZS-5300) which had the best solution I´ve seen: Zone 1 controls, Zone 2 controls, Zone 3 controls, Global controls, everybody understood it right away, even the most technophobes. I wish Sherwood improves this unit receiver in that way. Also, a higher priced version with 2 Airplay zones will be welcome.

    Overall: 5 out of 5

Very good product for price. Easy to set up except for connecting external speakers. No definitive directions, only a drawing showing lines representing wires for connecting speakers. No indication that a jack adaptor or such would be available for attaching speakers. I had to cut RCA jacks off the end of my speaker wires and use bare wires for connections. No external FM antena connection for a home made antenna just a 75ohm jack.

    Great unit for the money

    Overall: 4 out of 5

I have been using this receiver for well over a year now and I am very happy with it. I was able to integrate this amplifier into my home audio system and enjoy that there is a separate On and Off button on the remote instead of just a toggle function for power. IR codes were easy to learn and I can now control this receiver with my home automation controller. This is a nice whole house receiver as it has dual stereo outputs for multi room applications . It is well built and looks like a quality product .

    Sherwood 4-channel receiver'

    Overall: 5 out of 5

Good sounding unit. Like having two receivers with the footprint of one. Gives the owner versatility in selecting program material for two seperate locations, or placing two distinct speaker setups in the same room and independently controlling their volume. I am very well satisfied with this receiver.
