Compression Midrange / High Frequency Driver
Threaded compression driver is compatible with horns having standard 1-3/8" x 18TPI threads.
I was right in the middle of restoring a couple of Klipsch Heresy floor standing speakers. I had everything else, but lacking the midrange horn drivers. I was a little reluctant to spend $300 on a pair of original drivers, so I decided to cheat and get some inexpensive drivers for now, just to get me rolling, and then get some real deal drivers after the holiday season when I will have some cash loosened up. Sounded like a plan to me.
Well, after installing the Pyle units, I discovered something. They sounded great. They are threaded into the original Klipsch midrange horns, which are heavy duty cast aluminum. And of course are in the original cabinets. I do not really think that it makes much difference, but they might make some, so full disclosure. A cheaper horn might bring them down a bit, but I doubt it.
I was especially surprised by the midrange frequencies. The voice detail is really sharp and the detail just gets better with an increase in frequency. Highs are just brilliant, very tight and well defined. I was totally shocked. With the response of this driver going down to 700hz, this could be the heart of an inexpensive two way speaker design, teamed up with, say, an eight inch woofer and a capable crossover.
Once I do upgrade my Klipsch speakers, I plan on using these same drivers in such a two way for a pair I'm building for my best friend. No doubt he will use these for a couple of decades.
Like I said, unexpectedly good for the money. If I had no knowledge of them before, and just listened to them, I'd have pegged it for at least a $100 unit. I highly recommend these for general hi-fi use. One thing I haven't done is drive these with more than 25 watts or so, but believe me, they were plenty loud enough at that power level. The rating is 300 watts, which probably would cause internal hemorrhaging in people within 50 feet.
