    • "Great Woofer for the money!" by kerrycourter on 10/17/2013
      Overall: 5 out of 5

I installed 2 of these woofers in a ported sub enclosure connected in parallel to equal 4 ohms and then connected them to 2 channels on my 4 channel amp bridged together. The bass was tight and deep for the size of the woofer. They are plenty loud for me. It would be nice if they could take a bit more power but as I said I am well pleased considering I only paid a little over $30 for the pair! I selected this particular woofer due to the low end frequency response as compared to some of the other 8 inch speakers. The xmax is also decent. These would be perfect in a 2 or 3 way bookshelf speaker. As for me I am using them in the 30-90 Hz range as subs.

    • "WOW !" by 101lbennett on 7/19/2012

I recently got a pr of vintage Martin Speakers USA that house an 8" woof + an SEAS tweeter in a box that's 15.25" high & 10.25" wide - a lot of speaker for such a small box. The woofs inside had invisible foam surrounds, = they were trash. So I got these MCM's to replace them. WOW. Serendipity. These speakers in these boxes are stunning. The bass the combo produces is beyond good. The words surprising and shocking are appropriate. BTW, never heard of Martin Speakers USA? Do a search for them. They are rare and special.

Blew one of the woofers in a large set of Yamaha bookshelf three ways I use for studio monitors. Glad I did! (blow the old one) after I installed the pair of these in conjunction with some MCM 4 1/2" inch mids ( total bill was 58 bucks to the door) it was the sonic equivalent of your sinus' clearing and everything gets loud and clear. They are built tough as well. Huge value.

    • "Very Impressed, Vey satisfied, Very Happy" by Marc6272 on 1/1/2012
      Overall: 5 out of 5

Everything worked perfectly. The delivery took 2 days (Standard ups Ground). The speakers themselves were very, very good. Much better than the original speakers. A much better upgrade, for a very reasonable price. They made a good pair of cabinets... turn into a great pair of speakers!! Very happy with MCM.. In all honesty, they are one of the best companies I deal with. Great service and support! Sincerly, Marc G Owner Atra Recording

      Overall: 5 out of 5

This was a very good speaker for a small closed box, clean bass on overload or distortion. Good power handling and will make any small cabinet sound system have a quality sound for a low priced speaker. Keep up the good work MCM for providing a value product for those of us that need to watch cost but still experince the quality. Music keeps the peace!

    • "Used as the main Near fields in Control RM B; Tannoys" by glamacchia on 10/6/2011
      Overall: 4 out of 5

I bought a pair of these to replace the 2 woofer drivers in my Tannoy PBM8's; my main near field monitors.

A brief history: I own a music / audio studio. Ironically several weeks before I blew out the woofers my partner after we re shot his control room confirmed that the left tweeter in his Tannoys was down about 25 db. (a 9 volt battery test confirmed it made noise but it was VERY quiet compared to the right tweeter) We both use ARC room correction software. For the past year and a half he has turned out mixes for film, theater and bands that have held up in different playback environments as the ARC compensated for one channel having a blown tweeter in a 2 way monitor.

I figured if he could work with a blown (down 25 or 30 DB) tweeter in one monitor let my me try any old woofer and let ARC correct its flaws. The only requirement I had was it had to fit; 8" and 8 or 4 mounting holes. This speaker was one of the few that had 4. NOTE Tannoy no longer makes the same woofer replacement- the one that is available for $78 has only 4 mounting holes.

Well How do they sound??? I

Replaced them and played back a mix I am very familiar with. With the ARC room correction software on the low end was a bit weak. I bypassed the ARC and these 2 woofers sounded like what the Tannoy woofers sounded like with ARC on. In short these two woofers are probably not as sensitive as the Tannoys so the low end is down several DB. I actually had 2 bass peaks prior that the ARC was removing so ARC was subtracting lows at 80 HZ to correct for the room.

I still need to reshoot my room to guarantee that these are again ruler flat and accurate for tracking and mixing. I can say that the original Tannoys were a longer through woofer than these- perhaps I should have bought the 4 ohm long through MCM lists- I bet they would have been sonically a more accurate replacement.. but for $15.98 plus shipping I am not complaining.

I did like the fact that there were two mounting terminals on the speaker- -small and larger spade plug. The existing wire terminal slide write on. The side marked + when a positive voltage is applied cause the cone to move out. The same as the Tannoys. So if they can work in a modern production facility as the replacement woofers in the main near fields, they should be fine for home listening. Depending on what you are replacing they could sound better or worse...but with some EQ to correct the design of your speakers or difference in response of these you should be fine. If you need an exact replacement for a pair of super hi fidelity speakers and you absolutely refuse to color your speakers with EQ or room correction software then you better break out your slide rule and find a speaker with an EXACT characteristic to replace your already over priced speakers.. I say let technology make average sound phenomenal.
