Big Rattling Boom, fun little woofer

      Overall: 5 out of 5

I mounted one of these in a cabinet for a smaller project over a year ago. I ended up using it on my 500W monoblock amplifier (250W @ 8 ohms) in my car for fun and still use it. It rattles the windows of my car no problem with deep yet punchy bass. I never need to turn it up all the way with my house music so I don't know its limits. It replaces two 10" 4 ohm subwoofers that were overkill and really big. Not what most would use it for but a good example of how cool this little woofer is.

      These are great performing drivers...

      Overall: 4.5 out of 5

The only minor trouble that I have found is that sometimes the metal connector that joins the tab that the terminals are on to the basket can get loose and cause a "rattling" sound on high-excursion signals that sounds exactly like a coil scraping inside the gap. It took me a while to figure out that a few speakers that I had replaced were actually fine. I just had to squeeze the small connector from both sides with a small pair of pliers until the tab was unable to be twisted anymore. I had mistakenly thought that I over-excursed them while "stress testing" or dropping a needle onto a record with the volume too loud, as I do infrequently. These little speakers can take a bit of a "beating".

I am in the beginning phases of building an experimental ported isobaric subwoofer box using two of these that I now have spare.

I built the best sounding speakers I’ve ever heard using the 55-1862 speakers. Here’s how: I had purchased a pair of JBL TLX121 speakers at a yard sale for $2 …they had bad drivers. I replaced the woofer with the 55-1862, the tweeter with a silk dome tweeter from Boston Acoustics A60 speakers (ebay) and a crossover from Boston Acoustics A120 speakers (again, ebay). Incredible tight and balanced sound. The low end will astound you and the upper detail is profoundly real. People think I have a subwoofer. I’ll never part with these. The 55-1862 is an incredible deal at any price.

Great Sound. Do not exceed power ratings

      Overall: 4 out of 5

A great replacement speaker for old/damaged ones! Very tight bass. Do not exceed maximum power ratings. I blew one up after hooking it to an high power receiver. Second replacement has been holding up fine as long as I keep the speaker hooked up to the smaller receiver.
