    Awesome Speakers!

    Overall: 3 out of 5

I ordered these on a Sunday evening and they were in my hands before noon the following Wednesday. Dropped right in my speaker boxes with no additional cuts - and they sound GREAT!!

Seem to be a solid driver but the published specs are a bit off

    Overall: 4 out of 5

I bought four of these recently when on clearance so it was an exceptional value.. I have to say that these things are built like tanks! Heavy and solid, A thick ribbed cone, solid and durable cast frame, nice tight suspension and huge magnet to go with it's large diameter voicecoil ... The cone actually feels stronger than some higher priced 12s with 4" voicecoils, very nice. Glue joints all seem well executed.. The cone, voicecoil and dust cap all seem well centered and solid ...No VC rubs..... After getting a good look a the voicecoils (you can see some windings through vents where the magnet meets the frame) I suspect that the 350w rms power rating is conservative.. I was highly impressed with everything about this driver until i hooked it up to me Dayton DATS woofer tester unit and found out that the specs are different than what is published on the MCM website .... All four drivers had similar T/S parameters ... Example of one driver's measured results: FS = 61.24 ........RE = 6.96 ohms ........ QTS= .907 .... QES = 1.056 .....QMS = 6.433 .... LE = 2.427 (at 1KHZ) .......VAS= 34.58 liters .... mms=85.59 grams ..... With these specs these drivers could work very well in a TL (qwp) cabinet or a Tapped PIpe (AKA Transflex/Air Coupler) tuned in the range of 35hz to 40hz .. The lack of motor strength (high QES/QTS) indicates that these drivers are different from the sample that the published specs are derived from, it appears that the OEM used a different grade of ferrite or larger magnetic gap was used in the production drivers (versus the sample) ... I took one of these drivers to a friend who makes custom "SPL" drivers for car audio competitions and he put the 2992 on his industrial magnetizer machine and gave it a good zap but was unable to improve the charge, the QTS/QES remained basically the same... The OEM who constructed these drivers appears to be the same factory who made the 55-298X series for MCM (I owned the 55-2981s as well) and they also have the higher-than-published QES/QTS figures...
