    Lots of promise, but...

    Overall: 2 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

An initial listen at low level seemed ok. However, bass notes at a little higher level seemed noisy. Investigation showed that while this speaker has small vents in the cone neck to relieve air pressure between the rubber "spider" in front of the cone (a good idea to provide a good seal from moisture, insects, etc.), the holes are not completely punched out. Can you say "hanging chads"? These buzz, whistle, and some are barely punched at all, resulting in even less air flow than the few small holes would provide. Both speakers received were nearly identical wrt this problem. Ugh. The QC must be utterly dismal.

Then there is the issue of power handling. This speaker has a modest winding height coil (maybe .4") on a 1" dia. aluminum(!) bobbin coupled to a polypropylene(!) cone, and the top plate is very thin, to boot. There is no special cone neck construction to help hold things together as the glue joint at the spider and cone to coil heats up. Worse, the voice coil wires are dressed up the cone neck in "conventional" fashion, so, as the cone & neck (glue) joint softens as things heat up, the single conductor leads will flex, work harden, and break. Now I know this is a cheapo Chinese speaker, but, this problem was solved 35 years ago (and specifically for pp cones by yours truly almost 30 years ago).

I would be VERY surprised if this speaker can survive a half day EIA power test at over 35 watts, and I'd be even more surprised if it could withstand 25 watts day in and day out. Maybe 30 years ago, I'd have said, ok, if one operates this speaker on well recorded music and NEVER EVER clips their 80 watt (not underrated) amp, one might get by. But in today's world of "loudness wars", and God-awful satellite radio audio quality, are you kidding?)

I suppose one can hope that if it comes to it (hopefully not), Chinese military technology has similar 35 year old Achilles heels...

On the good side of things, the lead wires are made of what appears to be a good quality, heavy duty (for this size speaker) tinsel, and their length and position on the underside of the cone is good, and consistent within the 2 drivers examined.

Most of the construction is neat, with glue beads in proper amounts. However, some epoxy was slurped over onto the 2nd spider roll spider on one speaker.

My 2 speakers DID come with the capacitor - resistor crossover installed.

A grill with really fine mesh screening built in, to keep bugs out, would be a nice accessory (hint, hint.)

What's really unfortunate is that for about 5-10 cents added production cost (in China), this could be a quite good speaker for the $$.

    Be careful, requires a crossover!

    Overall: 3 out of 5

The webpage makes no mention of it, but the speaker does not contain a crossover, not even a single capacitor. I downloaded the spec sheet, and it mentions an included capacitor and resistor. Neither of the speaker boxes contained any components, so I assumed they were built in, . . . nope!
I was lucky I didn't blow out the tweeters.
So, what do they sound like? I have no idea since I have to go out and buy two crossovers, and they will be proper crossovers, not just a non-existent capacitor. I gave it a 3 for value since I have to add crossovers, and a 3 due to the missing "feature" of a minimum capacitor.

    Great Sound.. Great Price!

I was curious about this speaker so I purchased 2 to play with. The connections for the woofer and the tweeter are mounted separately on opposite sides of the basket, which makes for great connections for a 2-way crossover network. A tweeter crossover is included (4.7 uF cap/2.2 ohm resistor) but the woofer normally runs full range. I found the mids to be too harsh and tamed them down with a 1mH. choke (MCM Part #: 555-25505 ) in series from the amp to the woofer. Mounted them in a .35 ft. sealed enclosure lined with ~1.5 in. of cotton batting. They sound fantastic! Almost magic! Vibrates the floor with a Lepai T-Amp! (15w/ch.) Easily fills a room with sound. Great bass. My wife likes them so well, she stole them from me! Build a set, you won't regret..
