    The inexpensive subs that could!

    Overall: 5 out of 5

    Quality:

I bought a pair of these to use in a pair of vintage R&R custom built horn slotted subwoofers. I was impressed by the power handling capabilities. I employ a Crown XLS2000 at 650 watts per cab, into 4 ohms. Crossed over at 197 Hz. They handle it without issue. So, I took two of my Crown XLS1000 amplifiers, and bridged them each for 1,100 watts, into 4 ohms, and they had no problem dealing with that power. Granted, I boosted the DSP crossover up to 250 Hz, but they kept going without issue. I've done this twice now, for two all day outdoor gigs. Live bands and prerecorded playback. I've had them for almost 4 years now, going strong. I have a pair of JBL SR4715A dual 15" subwoofers with the original drivers, and these go toe to toe with them. In large outdoor gigs, the JBLs are stage left and stage right, while the R&R cabinets are center stage. I get all the chest pounding thump I need out of them. They pump 650 watts out, easily. I got them when they were on sale. Haven't seen that happen again, since. Otherwise, I'd buy another pair. I have a pair of Peavey single 15" front mounted subs that I'd like to put those in. One word of note, these are more suited for rear mounting into your cabinets. As they will only fit in my rear mounted horn slotted subs. I couldn't get them in any other of my 5 pairs of front mounted subwoofers, without having to do major surgery on my cabinet openings. (Which I elected not to modify them for fit, in fear of making the holes too big for other branded future drivers) However, if they ever go on sale again, I'm buying another pair.

    Clear low end power

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I loaded a pair of these 4ohm 15's into a set of LaScala cabs for our live show PA system. Sure, not many people really -want- to drag around a washing machine sized cabinet these days, but we were looking for clear, clean low end, not the typical slightly smeared "thump" some modern front loaded cabs sometimes tend to have, and we've always liked the sound of horn set ups from "back in the day" (plus, they look unusual compared to typical line array PAs now days, which was an aesthetic bonus). The drivers bolted up without issue and were put into use being fed by a single Crown XLS1000 crossed over at 250hz putting around 350 watts RMS into each cab - part of this systems design spec was lower than typical modern power draw, so we were aiming for as high of efficiency as possible while trading off portability.

Each cabinet is fed with a 12g wire using standard binding post connections (I would strongly suggest speakons however, we will be upgrading soon - in the dark for tear down, they are much simpler to live with).

As we wanted high efficiency as well as clarity, I was watching those specs pretty closely. Good choice on this driver in this cab. The whole PA can easily be run from a single 15A line if needed with power headroom to spare, and is quite sufficient to get us noise complaints from a mile and a half away in the right conditions.

A year later, they are still in use and still sound clean and clear. In this particular cabinet, they do not go -super- low (we don't have anything like a downtuned 6 string bass guitar or super low synths to worry about). They are also much more directional than a typical low driver would be, which is nice. With the Db SPL meter holding at 98, you can clearly see the grass moving a few feet out, and if not decoupled, feel them in the ground. Depending on your cab and mounting, as well as content, you may or may not get that. So far in testing, we have fed them pretty much everything from very heavy rock to jazz, blues to classical (pipe organ music is particularly fun to explain a noise complaint on - the police thought we had a real one hidden somewhere). Typically they are running around 108-112db on the meter (which may need re-calibration, take that number with a large grain of salt). I have yet to hear any sort of distortion or weird gaps or bumps in the low end response, though we aren't pushing these drivers anywhere near their limits. Mostly because it just isn't needed - we've had no trouble getting the folks at the top seats at the racetrack to hear us from the infield or across large outdoor parks. As is typical, our high end doesn't carry nearly as cleanly as far as the lows from these drivers in these cabs. It might be time for more mid and high bins, but we are out of trailer space.

Mids and highs in this system were also all MCM drivers in horn cabs, and very clear coverage for medium sized outdoor venues has been fairly easy to do with very reasonable power draw. Moving such a system on the other hand is a day at the gym and won't fit into a compact car.

    Driver build:

The cast frames are well made, no sharp edges or weird casting flaws to complicate mounting, and notably beefy. The cones are flawless with no issues, and the suspension system is well made and well mounted. Eventually, I foresee a second set of these, once we have a larger trailer for transport.

Highly recommended in a similar application to ours, and probably a very solid choice for many other applications that would be more typical (I can only comment on how we have used them thus far).
