  • "Tenma Benchtop DMM with Frequency & Temperature" by hongrn on 5/10/2014
    Overall: 4.5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

Pros: Inexpensive, great value, well lit display with large digits, lots of features.

Cons: Hard to turn selection dial (gripping part needs to be larger). No Celsius temperature selection; Battery and storage hatches require screwdriver to open, would have been nice to provide thumb screws instead.

Overall, besides these minor inconveniences, you can't beat the price and features. Very happy with the purchase.

  • "Decent Meter" by wd5don on 9/23/2013
    Overall: 4 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

This seems to be a pretty decent little meter for the price. I have discovered that I am not a fan of autoranging, so the big function/range select knob is actually a plus for me, as is the absolutely huge LCD display. The backlighting is bright and even. The power switch is on the front where it belongs (I also own the 72-1020, and detest the fact that it’s on the back).

The meter both displays and sounds a warning if a test lead is inserted in one of the “current” jacks when not on a current setting. A standard K type temperature probe is included, as is a pair of short leads with (permanently attached) alligator clips – presumably intended for measuring capacitors and resistors.

On the flip side, there’s no removable alligator clip provided for the ground wire…a definite inconvenience. There’s no analog scale of any kind, either. The test leads seem a bit cheap and inflexible, and are definitely not the quality included with the pricier 72-1020. You have to put up with a wall wart for power. You are also supposed to deal with moving the black probe to a separate jack for measuring capacitance, temperature, and transistor gain. These functions DO work with the probe in the “COM” jack, so I’m sure that changing jacks simply allows the internal fusing to protect the meter against inadvertently applying voltage during these tests. This consumes extra time and could be a potential problem if you’re used to simply twisting the dial and measuing a component.

My biggest gripe with this and, indeed, most recent meters I’ve encountered is the current level provided on the diode test. The 72-1055 does not provide sufficient current to light many LEDs. In fact, most earlier standard brightness LEDs will not light at all. In contrast, my old Tech 330 provides more than enough.

Finally, who in the world would design a meter with a test lead/accessory storage compartment that requires a coin or a screwdriver for access? It's a hassle to use, so I don't store any of the accessories in the lid.

I haven’t had the unit for long enough to speak for its durability or robustness.

Pros: Huge LCD display, power button in front, includes temperature probe, warns user if wrong jack chosen for function selected, no autorange, battery power option.

Cons: No alligator clip provided for ground wire, no analog scale, somewhat inflexible test leads, wall wart for AC power, diode test current too low to light many LEDs, need screwdriver or coin to open top storage.

On a total side note - MCM, why can't we put line/paragraph breaks in reviews? It would allow much better neatness and organization of thoughts.

Delivery was fast. Meter appears to be more accurate than quoted. Ad was packaged with unit selling it for $79. That hurt my feelings because I just paid $30 more. Should I have returned it and than reordered at the lower price? Other than price drop item features and capabilities are great.
