Probe tip is actually capacitive, not inductive

      Overall: 4.5 out of 5

Extech, the maker of this set, mistakenly claims that the probe uses a "Insulated inductive probe tip ". In fact, it is an insulated capacitive probe tip (the opposite of an inductive probe tip), just like other probes on the market. This is easily checked by taking the unit apart and seeing that there is only one electrical connection to the tip. It is also borne out by the fact that if the red & black probes are connected to a cable, the probe only detects the signal if the other end of the cable is open. Short it and the signal disappears. This is characteristic of a capacitive probe. An inductive probe would work the opposite way.

I've tried it but I haven't really used it on a job. It works and appears to do what I bought it for. Delivery was prompt

      Slightly Imperfect

      Overall: 4.5 out of 5

The tone generator/probe I received actually has a flaw. The manual says that the LED glows green for continuity test. But it doesn’t. Instead, it glows red. That’s because the polarity of the LED was reversed by mistake when the product was made. Although that doesn’t hinder the operation of the unit, it is annoying because it doesn’t match what the manual says. But you can take time to fix the problem yourself and at the same time learn something: open the generator, carefully take out the circuit board, desolder the LED, reverse its polarity, and solder it. As far as I know, the unit performs well for cable trace, phone line check, and continuity. I haven’t tried its full usage. By the way, don’t forget to check the battery power if the device doesn’t seem to function. In my case I needed to replace the battery before the first use.

I was finally able to find the one broken network line in the mass of wires in the wire closet. Talk about making a job a whole lot easier. An indespensable tool for any tech working with low voltage lines. Don't forget to also order the RJ45 (MCM #: 22-13684) & RJ11 (MCM #: 22-13686) adapters to make things even easier. Of course, I'm saying this because I did forget and had to makeshift one on the spot to get things done. I will be ordering these to make things a little easier next time around.

Considering the low price, I had my doubts. But this unit works as well as many others I've tried. At $35 bucks, I dont have to worry as much about my techs destroying them. A great item for the price.
