    ProsKit Cal meter

    Overall: 4 out of 5

I used a previous capacitance meter until the display failed. I needed a new one. This one is MUCH more useful because it measures from a few pF to several thousand uF. The display is large enough to read and can be brightly back-lit by push of a button. The only regret is I did not see this before.

It does what it should, that said..

    Overall: 2 out of 5

I received it minus a QC sticker, and it shows. Right out of the box the numbers were all over the place and it refused to give an accurate reading. What kind of tech would I be if I just sent it back without taking it apart to look first? So here's the low down.

Out of the box it reeks of CHEAP. Yeah, I know it's not a FLUKE. But I don't think I have encountered this grade of plastic, well, ever. Even the 9v battery connector feels like a warm breeze will cause it to fail. I guess time will tell. Everything felt cheap right down to the leads and the cover is confusing to remove to gain battery access. Whoever wrote the manual should have hired a professional translator because that is equally confusing to decipher and was of no help removing the outer cover to gain battery access. It's honestly of no help in general to be frank.

At any rate, I took the back off the unit to find a grounding spring bent sideways and never making contact with the rear EMI shield. Straightened that up, stretched it a little and all was right with that now. Moving along I removed the PCB. I fired up my soldering station and went to work on a few questionable solder joints (RoHS compliance should just DIE already..). Tested again, still numbers all over the place in the high ranges and showing overload in the low. Removed the collar around the rotary switch and flipped that over to find that one side has an additional contact, and the hard stop on the dial is built into the body not the switch. Without the body in place the rotary if free to rotate 360 degrees and having the additonal contact on the one side made me wonder. I rotated the dial 180 degrees so the contact arrangement switched places and VIOLA! I had a meter zeroing in every position! They assembled it BACKWARDS from the factory!

This meter is an embarassment from the paper to the plastic. And if I could go back and do it all over again, I would run with the TENMA unit all day. The TENMA is HALF the price! But I gave this thing a chance just like I did my ExTech meter 10 years ago when that company was wet behind the ears. Low and behold I still love that meter and the company is doing quite well in the respect department. I don't think 'Proskit' will have the same future at this rate. The TENMA unit of comparison has the same testing range and a better company rep for quality. The second reason I gave these guys a chance is because I love backlit meters and I didn't see that on the TENMA. I have to work in dark places at times.

On to the reason it received more than one star. After I spent some time repairing my brand new meter, I ran some capacitor tests. It gives well within manual spec'd tolerance readings on all ranges and types I tested and the backlight is very bright with very large display numbers. They don't tell you that you can test capacitors in circuit, so take note here this unit WILL test in circuit. It also comes with a standard set of meter probes, a shot probe set with alligator clip ends, and a stub plug with dual wipe receiving pins for your ceramic caps and so forth. They really need to publish more features and specs instead of giving you the joy of reading that horrid manual and figuring the rest out yourself.

My final thought is that if you need a backlight, this thing isn't broken out of the box already, and reading horrible english translations from god only knows what language appeals to you; It will do it's job as advertised. I purchased the LCR meter they make and that was on backorder and is now on it's way. I can't wait to see how bad that one is. In all honesty, looking back, the TENMA LCR + CAP meter combo would be cheaper and probably the better choice. I would have only needed an LCR, but I wanted a range clear up to 20,000uf and that isn't the ceiling on either companies LCR's. So I ended up with two meters. Hopefully you found this informative. I think there is a better piece of equipment on this very same website for less ;)
