The 1665 Switching DC Power Supply uses new switching technologies to offer more power at a lower cost than traditional linear power supplies.
We bought one of these recently - it seems to work OK under normal circumstances, but I thought I should note that its short circuit protection seems to be a little inadequate to really protect it from damage. The short bar was inadvertently left in place when it shouldn't have been (don't you hate those things?) and the resulting short smoked it permanently, despite the fuse blowing and the current limiter being on a relatively low setting (the voltage was at max though). Our 1665 (RIP) did what it was supposed to in most other respects, but it doesn't seem to be as robust as a lot of power supplies.
