The design is based around a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, which includes an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, and 512 Megabytes of RAM. This revision B+ board features four mounting holes for easy installation, a built-in reset circuit, and can be powered via the USB data ports. The design does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state drive, instead relying on an microSD card for booting and long-term storage. This board is intended to run Linux kernel based operating systems.

The Raspberry Pi uses Linux-kernel based operating systems. The Raspberry Pi does not come with a real-time clock, so an OS must use a network time server, or ask the user for time information at boot time to get access to time and date info for file time and date stamping. However a real time clock (such as the DS1307) with battery backup can be easily added via the I2C interface.

  • "Capable little computer!" by JonDad on 9/10/2014

Everyone, including those who have a full size desktop should own one of these! Imagine your PC failing and not having another, well this capable little computer can do almost all things your "big" desktop can while you fix your desktop or wait and even order parts! Great as a back up, internet ready computer! It was easier to set up and use than we thought! I have never used Linux and it is still pretty easy to transition from Windows. Every peripheral was plug and play, even our Logitech diNovo mini (bluetooth). HDMI works great both audio and video. While not as easy and seamless as a Windows PC it's not hard to learn and if you want a graphical user interface just type "startx" in command prompt (Raspbian) and BOOM, desktop with clickable icons, start button, taskbar...the list goes on and on. Glad we picked one up and plan on having on in every room as HTPCs and general tinkering! Shipping was fast and MCM did a fine job with the packaging! GET ONE!

  • "Absolutely love the new B+" by silaradams on 8/2/2014

When I got my first B+, I was a little afraid I'd have some compatibility issues. So far, I've gotten 9 of these and not had one problem. The layout is so much better. That was always my gripe with the B. Also switching to the micro SD was the greatest thing they could have done. I don't know how many original B's I've seen with broken SD card slots. Even got a few broken when I received them brand new.

The only problem now is the limitation of cases where these have not been out long. Also, supply and demand has caused some things like the cases to go on backorder..

  • "Raspberry Pi Model B updated to be even more Model B-ish" by on 7/30/2014
    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

The Raspberry Pi offers a great platform for development or hobbyist electronic use and the Model B was originally the more feature-rich version. The B+ now brings us an expanded GPIO (40-pin, up from 26-pin), 2 more USB ports (up to 4 total), the SD card slot is now push-button, power consumption is less (down to 0.5w to 1w), provided a low noise power supply for better audio, added mount holes and moved the composite video into the 3.5mm audio jack for a tighter form factor. All in all, a great minor update!

  • "Better than the original B!" by on 7/29/2014
    Overall: 5 out of 5

    Quality:

So far, it's been working pretty well. Have zero issues so far. Only complaint is when using an additional board on top, connect to the GPIO (like an LCD module). Sometimes there are contacts on the otherside of the board which can short on the ethernet or USB ports, so it would be nice if there was a little cover for them. Not a huge deal and can be fixed with electrical tape.

Overall, this is a much better version than the model B. The extra GPIO pins will definitely be coming in handy, as well as the extra USB ports. So glad there are mounting holes as well (a feature that was severely missing from the original A and B).

  • "PI B+" by on 7/23/2014
    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

Received the raspberry pi and hooked it all up with any hitches. I first thought the NOOBS was incorrect as this pi version uses a microSD card not a standard SD card. But it turned out the SD card is an adaptor for the microSD card. So It's there just hard to see and no instructions came with it about separating the microSD from the SD card to install it on the pi.
