Shop all Raspberry Pi accessories

The design is based around a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC, which includes an ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, and 512 Megabytes of RAM. This revision B+ board features four mounting holes for easy installation, a built-in reset circuit, and can be powered via the USB data ports. The design does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state drive, instead relying on an microSD card for booting and long-term storage. This board is intended to run Linux kernel based operating systems.

The Raspberry Pi uses Linux-kernel based operating systems. The Raspberry Pi does not come with a real-time clock, so an OS must use a network time server, or ask the user for time information at boot time to get access to time and date info for file time and date stamping. However a real time clock (such as the DS1307) with battery backup can be easily added via the I2C interface.

Haven't gotten far enough along to comment on the Raspberry Pi B+ but I will say that, unless you have some other reason for needing the NOOBS SD card (e.g. you have an older B or an A that uses the full size card) save yourself five bucks and buy the 83-16317 instead of this one. The Full size SD NOOBS card they ship with this one is not useable with the B+. The B+ requires a micro-SD card. You can download the NOOBS package from the Raspberry Pi website for free and, even if you have the card that ships with this board, you're still going to need to buy a micro-SD card and copy the NOOBS package over to it in order to use with the B+. Why they package this computer with a physically incompatible card is kind of a head scratcher.

This is the first Raspberry Pi I have owned and my experience so far with it has been good. I purchased it during a shipping price reduction special which I was waiting for. I also purchased a case and a power supply separately because it was a little cheaper then buying the kit that includes it all, while this combo with the NOOBS card is a good deal. It is easy to set up with the NOOBS card and the Raspian OS seems to be a well thought out and complete OS. It even recognized my USB WiFi adapter which has a Ralink RT5572 chipset that until recently was not supported natively by most Linux OS's. I am fairly new to Linux but I thought I might have to try to compile the driver myself or get a different adapter but was surprised to see it just work. The Raspian config program at startup is very helpful and if you use the NOOBS card it has a recovery option if you should mess it up too badly.

Now that I have some experience with it I can see that purchasing the NOOBS card was unnecessary. If you have a micro SD card of at least 8 GB you can download the NOOBS content from the Raspberry Pi website. This combo is still a good deal if you need the micro SD card. You can also download the Raspian image to write to a micro SD card without the NOOBS. For Windows you would need the "Win32DiskImager" program to write the Raspian image. Now my job is to find something interesting to do with the Pi besides just learning how to set it up. This is a very low cost way of having a Linux machine to learn with and learning is the whole purpose of buying it.

I own several Model B boards and purchased my first B+ immediately after it became available, which now sits next to the others. I really appreciate the extra USB ports and I have used them all for keyboard, mouse, WiPi WiFi, and a 500GB external 2.5" hard drive (uses its own power supply), all without the need for the USB hub I've had to use on a few of my other model B's. Have run into no compatibility differences/issues in the past few weeks and it works great --- in fact, I tend to forget it is different from the others until I look at the USB ports. Of course, I've ordered more.
