The updated Pi 2 Model B design is based around a Broadcom BCM2836 SoC, which includes an Quad Core ARM7 900 MHz processor, VideoCore IV GPU, and 1 Gigabyte of RAM. This revision Pi 2 Model B board features four mounting holes for easy installation, a built-in reset circuit, and can be powered via the USB data ports. The design does not include a built-in hard disk or solid-state drive, instead relying on an microSD card for booting and long-term storage. This board is intended to run Linux kernel based operating systems.

The Raspberry Pi uses Linux-kernel based operating systems. The Raspberry Pi does not come with a real-time clock, so an OS must use a network time server, or ask the user for time information at boot time to get access to time and date info for file time and date stamping. However a real time clock (such as the DS1307) with battery backup can be easily added via the I2C interface.

First of all, these boards are so cheap. I have gotten over 100 of these boards. You make this board do what ever you want. MCM electronics is the best place to buy. They have great service and very fast shipping. I wont buy my Raspberry pi's from any where else.

There are many things about this Pi that remind me of a classic car.
For lots of projects, they do the job without fuss or failure.
For computing power on battery, they are very hard to beat (40 hrs on a stock PNY 10KAh phone booster).

This is a powerhouse. 1gz and an upgradable micro SD card up to 32 gb. I run a 16gb class 10 nexttec paid less than $8 at the source by circuit city canada. I have purchased many with very satisfactory results. Adding wifi to it is a simple dongle costing $5-$10 if you want the best results dont skimp on a remote control. You get what you pay for.

Gotta love some quad processing power with 1Gb of ram sitting behind it. You really can feel the extra power packed in these Pi 2 Model B's compared to the older Pi Model B+. I use Kody with this along with quite a few add-ons so that I have all the tv/movie channels I could want without needing to pay high cable bills.

Very nice board, fast enough to run MIDI synthesizers without going bare metal or RTOS (though I would suspect bare metal and RTOS are even better). I also purchased the Cirrus/Element14 Audio Card which works nicely too. Tried both raspbian and Arch linux, both work well with raspbian having a GUI out-of-the-box with NOOBS. Excellent support.

Can't beat the Raspberry Pi 2!

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I now have 14 Raspberry Pi 2 boards doing various tasks on my home network. I have them running a weather station with home-made sensor platform, managing an XBee mesh network of sensors, running network intrusion detection systems and a couple of firewalls, SSH server, and a web server hosting my personal blog. As you can see, I really love these little computers! As other reviewers have noted, the 2 is a significant power and performance increase over other models. I have yet (knock on wood) to have an issue with any of my machines. They run the operating system, my custom software, IDS, firewalls, LISP environment, and Apache2 web server flawlessly! I like them so much I even have a STEM outreach proposal in to my employer to set up a "weekend of coding" workshop using Raspberry Pi 2 "workstations." Five stars for value and features. Fantastic computers!

    Top 25 Contributor

I was truly amazed at how much faster this unit is over the original RPi. I installed a custom version of Debian Jessie and loaded Kstars and VNC. I was shocked at how responsive Kstars was while running on such a small PC. It has no problem updating the screen in real-time, as well as controlling my LX90 while logged in via VNC on my TM330 pad. Even the wireless joystick works without any issues. I have no doubt this little fella will eventually work when I hookup a CCD to the system. If you are into electronically assisted astronomy, give the RPi 2 a try. You will be glad you did.

    Compact Computer

    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

I bought this Pi to use as a compact linux machine. It works nice, was easy to setup, and I had Raspbian running in no time. I've played around with various configurations on multiple SD cards so I can easily swap from Raspbian ro Raspbmc and what not. The small form-factor and easy setup make it rather fun to tinker around with. It works great as a simple computer for various things like surfing the web, compiling code, and even pushing media to a TV; which is pretty much the limit of what I've done with it so far.

Build a home theater PC or a decent desktop replacement inexpensively ($50)

    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

For approximately $50 (Pi, SD card and case) you can have a fully functional HTPC and/or a basic desktop. Being interested in tinkering is helpful but you don't really need any experience to get started. Download a system image, write it to the card and boot up. Or, buy a card with an OS pre-installed. The Pi user guide will help you get started with Linux commands. It's fun!

    Best Pi yet

    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

Nice little development board. I bought it to parallel a project I am developing with a Beaglebone Black. This little Pi seems to perform at least as well as the BBB, But seems to have a broader support community. Even though it has less I/O pins than the BBB, I think it will make a nice controller for my application. The shipping from MCM took much longer than I would have thought. About 10 days. They charged more than reasonable rates, and it arrived by USPS in an unprotected paper envelope. The product is great, the shipping service was poor.

I was extremely satisfied with my two B+'s. Until I got the Pi 2. I can't verify the 6X increase that they claim, as I haven't benchmarked it, but in real applications it is noticeably faster. It also runs a bit cooler that my B+. Well worth the upgrade.

I have the RPI Model B and the B+ and they are good, but the RPI 2 Model B is fantastic. The boot speed is very quick. Shows what more cores and memory will do for a computer. If you are looking for ARM based system this is one I would recommend.

Nice upgrade to be sure. Opens Emulation Station at least 2-3 times faster than the model b+. Of which for some reason I had NO problem setting up a wired Xbox 360 controller.... Outstanding value. Get one for a back up pc so if your desktop goes down you can still browse the internet, if anything. These are too good a value to pass up, back up for pc or full on security camera project! GET ONE!

This Raspberry Pi is awesome to mess around with. I am learning how to code and this thing definitely challenges me since I know nothing. It provides me with everything I need to start off except for a USB mouse and keyboard and a screen that takes HDMI input. But most people will have those items laying around or be able to buy them for cheap. The $35 I paid for this is cheap enough to allow me to buy the mouse and keyboard on amazon too. Awesome micro-computer. Buy it!

    Great Piece for Retro Gaming

    Overall: 4.5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

I am currently using this board with the Raspbian RetroPie image on a 32GB SanDisk class 10 micro SD. This board runs PSX games through RetroPie at full speed with few sound errors. A lot of N64 games run well, but the software is still being optimized for the quad-core processor. SuperFX chip games? No problem on the Pi 2.

However, I have some tips to save some people some time fiddling. If you are trying to use the PiGlow from Pimoroni, add the text "dtparam=i2c_arm=on" to the end of the config.txt in the "boot" directory. Also, use a power supply of at least 2.2A when using this device. Otherwise, it may freeze in times of high load.

It is a lot quicker than the first Raspberry Pi which was a bargain.
The four ports are a serious advantage. I have dedicated two
to a couple of USB memory sticks so I have storage that persists
as I swap one mSD for another. Off to play with Gambit Scheme
which compiled and ran directly from git. I am glad I bought a couple.

I purchased a Raspberry Pi B+ a few weeks ago, so when the Pi 2 Model B came out, I jumped at the chance to purchase one. I wasn't the least bit disappointed. The difference in speed between the B+ and 2B is night and day. Applications that the B+ would chug along, the 2B doesn't even brake a sweat. I've yet to see the processor max out on the 2B. A bonus is all the accessories I purchase for my B+ fit/work with the 2B!
As for value, one just has to surf the internet and see that MCM is keeping to the Raspberry Pi founders wishes of providing a quality product but keeping it affordable to the masses!

Great New PI...But watch the compatibility...

    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:
    Quality:

I took delivery of my new PI V2 Model B about a weeks ago and right out of the chute (without much information posted) I found out that the V2 Model B requires the Raspbian 1_31_15 release that's compiled to work with the ARM7 processor. It's no big deal, just download the image off the RPI website and burn it to an SD card - - it's just that this information wasn't posted anywhere since I took my V1 Model B+ image of Raspbian and tried to boot the V2 Model B with it - - that won't work. So be sure to use that new release. Also, peripherals that were supported to V1 Model B+ are slowly coming up to speed with this new PI. Adafruit 2.8" TFT Resistive Touch displays currently don't work with the V2 Model B PI, but the Engineers at Adafruit are working on a release to make it work - - as of 2/16/15 they aren't there yet with the release for that LCD display. So buyer beware on peripherals...Otherwise, it's a FAST board if you plug in a mouse, keyboard, wireless dongle, and an HDMI display - DEFINITELY faster than the V1 Model B+ and can stream video much better than the B+ or even A+ models. Worth the price..? DEFINITELY..!

A hard to believe incredible value!

    Overall: 5 out of 5
    Value:

If you have owned one of the earlier Raspberry Pi's, the first thing you are going to notice is the speed.

The first surprise when I opened the package was to find a tiny instruction manual in the box, with sections in several different languages. Since I have had Pi's prior to this one, the manual now was of lesser value to me, but for a first time owner, it would be a definite plus. However, anyone over 40 is going to need a magnifying glass, as the print is extremely small.

I ordered three (3) the moment I saw the new board come out and anxiously awaited their arrival. Within minutes, I had my first one up and running, added a 500GB USB HDD to the mix, and then started download/installing software to get it where I wanted. Everything runs much faster. I am impressed/amazed at the value and extremely appreciative that the Raspberry Pi Foundation was able to keep the price point where they have. Having been in tech more than a few years, I am truly amazed at how much power and value there is on this board.
