I used them on an open place at home.Place each on chairs, connect to a dvd player, moved each speaker buttons to left and right and start music. Wow!!, really loud music came out of those small speakers. Just add a subwoofer and that is. Now I don't have to move my EV SX500 15 inch to hear some music ocassionally, the Altec are perfect. Something to be considered would be a carring bag to move from place to place.

As others have commented, it's a little low on gain, but quite serviceable, though could also use a bit more treble. Overall though, this is a great amp'd speaker and I'm quite happy with it. So much so, I reordered. At this price you can't go wrong! Normally I use just one, but the design easily allows two to be used for stereo.

You can't go wrong. There is an input for your RCA cables and an output for another unit with RCA cables. You can string this in a cafe to keep volume down and series them from rooms in those cozy situations. This volum on each a guest a table can keep monitored while at a table 30 feet away, they can keep the volume full. The great thing is, you add your club mix with it at the stage and the whole place is wired like they had a live juke box - you'll see. You must get four of them to start. You will never return them.

    • "Some utility but limited usefulness" by shastabroadcaster on 11/16/2011
      Overall: 3 out of 5

Pros: flexible input/output options, sturdy case. Cons: Low gain, power transformer broke loose from mounts. I purchased this amp/speaker combination for use as a utility amp when recording in the field as a more robust alternative to computer speakers. The ability to bridge a stereo input is useful along with an output for a recording device or additional speaker. However, when connected to a laptop computer or iPod source, gain is lacking. Turning the laptop or iPod up to maximum barely produced a reasonable volume level before objectional distortion took place. I understand that this is not a "pro" speaker array, but this unit at most appears to be getting 5-10 watts peak output. with the bottom end not meeting what I would expect from a 6" driver. Additionally, during what I would consider quite normal handling, something (it sounds like the power transformer?) has come loose inside the case and is knocking around, which will require dissassembling the unit in order to make a repair. At $30 it's not worth paying the freight to send back for replacement.

    • "OK for gaming - not for Sound reinforcement or even monitoring" by lprejean on 11/8/2011

I bought this on a specil deal for $29.95. I do a one man show and thought I could use it for monitoring. I ran a mono signal from my Behringer mixer that had I-pod, guitar and vocal. I set the levels to my normal settings on the mixer and set the volume on the speaker to half. Volume was very underwhelming. I maxed the volume on the speaker and it was better, but still too low for monitoring. I raised the volume on the mixer's monitor out and then the speaker started to crap out, not really distort - just fade out. I guess the protection circuit was kicking in. in my opinion, definitely far short of the 40 watt rating, at least to my well calibrated ears. Oh well - I'll find some other use for it.

    • "Nice little speakers." by Strider on 10/27/2011

These Altec speakers are designed for the average living room but will work great for a patio party, classroom or small banquet room type arrangement. With only 6.5" the sound fades quickly outdoors. I use one of these in a 40' x 40' nursing home lunch room and it has plenty of volume. The output of an ipod is not going to get the max from these speakers. To get the most out of these speakers you have to feed them a powerful signal. They can handle more than line level. The speakers were designed to be driven by the speaker output from a TV and controlled by kids so they can take quite a bit. A pre-amp of some sort will make these speakers shine. I use one of these mixer units (MCM Part #: 555-9730) with a mono 1/4" to dual RCA (MCM Part #: 27-4195) which gives you a very nice 4 input mixer with echo effect and plenty of power to drive the Altec speakers to their fullest. Two minor drawbacks: The Altec speaker only has RCA connectors so you will need adapters to work in the 1/4" world. The large, tacky Altec Lansing logo stenciled on the grille can be covered with a black magic marker.

    • "Have used two for audiences of about 50 perfectly" by dhuitema on 8/15/2011
      Overall: 4.5 out of 5

      Quality:

Although not their intended purpose, these have served very well as powered PA speakers for an audience of about 50 in a 25' x 40' room. I've only used them twice, so far, with excellent results; one would have sufficed. Since I bought two, I expect they'll satisfy much larger audiences..... probably 150 or more. They are sufficiently directional to help control feedback, while providing ample, clear power to reach the audience. Setup is simple and flexible. Unlike normal PA speakers, they have no speaker stand mounting brackets, so they must be placed on top of sufficiently high surfaces (that's why I rated Features at 4/5). In every other respect, I've found them a perfect 5/5! Further use may reveal problems such as other have mentioned, of course (I'll post them if I do), but I'm a very happy camper, so far.

Buyers beware of this product, I ordered 2 each and recd them in a timely manner, tested it for a couple of minutes and stored it for a while, when i decided to use it after a couple of weeks, I plug the item the lights turns on then it dimmed there were no more power comming in the speakers, called Altec for replacement and issued me RMA but the problem is the shipping, it will cost me triple the price to send the broken item to them, what a hassle on my part, why can't I keep or throw the broken one and send me a good running unit, I did buy 2 of them anyways....stay away from this brand....

    • "Nice for anything with a pair of them" by kathleenw on 4/6/2011

They don't show you the 1" neodymium tweeter which is NICE to have. You daisy chain them and select left or right on each one so you get stereo! Use them for anything that plays music. Have them set up with XBOX 360, WII, and a karaoke system hooked up to a receiver. Excellent price and what fun we are having with them!

    • "Well made, nice idea, may not be loud enough for possible purposes..." by gmazich on 3/31/2011
      Overall: 4 out of 5

      Quality:

I bought a pair of these when they were the "deal of the day". At that price, I would rate them a 5 for value, but at the regular sale price or MSRP, I'd rate them a 3. So, I gave a 4 overall. First, they are well made and nicely designed. The features of daisy-chaining and channel selection are useful. However, they are not very loud when connected to my iPod Touch. I am using them as my computer speakers, and they are driven loud enough by my sound card. I will be trying them for other uses, but I don't expect them to blow me away. 40 watts is a good rating, but I don't think they can achieve that unless they are driven by a higher level input. Be aware that they may not be loud enough in many cases. I was going to return the pair in their master carton as shipped to me, but UPS wanted $17.50 and USPS would charge $16.85 to return them from Metro Detroit to Ohio. Rather than pad the shipper's pockets, I decided to utilize them as best I could. Just a frank advisory, so be sure you can live with the limitations before you order...
