Since newer receivers typically do not include magnetic phono connection, this pre—amplifier is required to connect a turntable to a conventional line level input. It is also necessary if playing LPs through a computer sound card, mixing console, or other professional equipment. In addition to providing the required gain, this unit also adds necessary RIAA equalization to compensate for the industry standard EQ curve utilized on LPs.

  This little pre-amp provides a wide range of amplification settings for an assortment of cartridges in your arsenal. If you do vinyl-to-digital transfers as much as I do with cartridges ranging from the new Shure DJ M-44 to the old Stantons, you'll appreciate this amp's ability to accommodate the wide range of outputs of these cartridges, even at higher RPMs. Response is remarkably flat. This pre-amp DOES NOT color the cartridge sound. The rolloff switches are transparent too, and do not color the music and they perform well. Some other reviews claim they don't notice a difference when switching them in and out, but if you have a DC coupled amp, you will hear a difference in the vinyl rumble for sure. I definitely notice a sweet, subtle difference of highs when the capacitive line-length loading switch is moved in or out. They can be switched in or out actively without "thumping" the audio. Whomever designed this little unit was thoughtful in that regard. The only complaint I have about it, is that it's power light is an annoyingly bright blue LED that practically acts as a nightlight for my studio. It's an extremely bright light that makes it hard to see the settings on the unit. I had to tape a piece of paper over it to throttle it back, so I could see my settings. Otherwise, for the price, a super-quiet, transparent pre-amp that delivers wide dynamic range with no hum, hiss or artifacts, and the ability to dial back the hot, new DJ M-44 from Shure is a blessing! The overload LED is accurate too, it's green when active signal is present (off when it's not), turns yellow to warn of getting into the median range and turns red to indicate clipping. Even when it just turns red the clipping is not audible, so the calibration must be set so the unit just starts to indicate red for a warning that you're about to clip the audio. Overall, a terrific little amp. It's small enough, you could probably velcro it right to the side of your TT for ease of access. Otherwise, it will stand on its side in your TT alcove just fine as long as it can lean against a wall. The wall-wart that runs it is standard fare, and is cool and quiet too.
