    Decent MIDI, poor software support!

    Overall: 2 out of 5

I got this with the thought that I'd have a keyboard with MIDI options, when actually it's quite useless unless connected to laptop or desktop (true MIDI controller)-- no standalone functionality. There are full-blown keyboards with built-in sounds that can do everything this can do and then some, if not quite as well, so consider this purchase carefully.

The velocity-sensitivity is...okay...but not great, so if you load up a piano voice, you'll get iffy response-- its lightest touch isn't so light (you gotta pound 'hard enough'), but for most MIDI this should be fine.

Don't bother with this unless you already have experience with MIDI software (or are willing to learn painfully from scratch), and note that the software it is supposed to come with requires LOTS of hurdles to actually DOWNLOAD from the actual website (it is not included in the package, despite what it says on the outside of the box, and even then I had to contact tech support to get special links emailed to me!). Also, if you're new, load the 32-bit version of things-- the 64-bit doesn't have very many voices and doesn't work as well, even on powerful 64-bit machines!

Though it's a decent purchase for what you get, if I had it to do over, I'd get a comparable dedicated keyboard with some MIDI functionality and work my way up to a keyboard like this one.
