  HER308 is not a suitable substitute for HER304 in most applications, despite having a higher voltage rating @ the same rate amperage & neglible difference in other characteristics (most notably a difference in maximum instaneous forward voltage drop), the HER308 will simly fail in most applications calling for HER304. This fact is due the difference in time of reverse recovery, or how long the device requires to recover a position on the characteristic current plotted against time graph where the succeeding incoming waveform can be properly rectified. The Trr of HER304 is 50nSec, while that of the HER308 is 75nSec---a 50% increase in the amount of time it takes for the device to recover. A better sub for HER304 is HER305, w/ a voltage rating of 400V @ 3A as opposed to the HER304's 300V maximum rating, and the same 50nSec Trr as the HER304.
