      82-19745 - Portable HD 1080p

      Overall: 5 out of 5

I have had several iterations of this product and overall I have been delighted. The latest units come with a 2" display that makes them even more useful. I have used them from mountain biking to astronomy to car dvr's. The only complaint I have is that the new version with the 2" display has defective firmware that no longer allows operation in continuous time lapse mode with the rear display off. This makes time lapse imagery rather pointless since the battery will discharge faster than taking live video. I sent a message to tech support about this issue but have heard nothing.

I did have one camera pop out of the protective enclosure and get crushed to oblivion by the crank arms of my bike. The newer unit's protective enclosure no longer has the latch lock as shown in the pictures. It was inevitable for a branch to catch and flip open the clasp without the lock.

A really nice feature is that the camera can be exclusively powered through the usb connector. No internal battery needed at all. The MCM #29-7850 Power Bank is a great way to power this camera and will last long enough to fill a 32gb card. Truly a great feature! Essential for those really long snow storm time lapse videos. Just use the cord that comes with the camera's charger plugged into the power bank.

And for those of you like me who tends to hack things this camera has great potential. I changed the lens on one of mine with a 2.8-12mm F/1.4 2 megapixel 1/2.7 zoom lens. These cameras use the standard 12mm x 0.5 thread lens mount. WOW now this camera has fantastic utility. I even gained about a full stop from the 1.8mm f/2 wide angle original lens. I think the manufacturer is missing a significant market/sales opportunity here. The modified camera is great for drone shots where you don't want your drone getting too close to the action. ( updrafts from house fires ect.) And with the zoom lens the camera can now be opto-coupled to other instrumentation for fabulous video of extreme telephoto without all that weight of a DSLR or camcorder. The 2" display with a magnifier allows for fairly accurate focusing. Digital zoom would be better. ( Manufacturer are you listening?)

Yes I have had a few mishaps with this camera but the low cost allowed me to get good video in situations I would have never considered using a $500 camera. Some of the video is priceless. And when I did grind one up in the crank of my bike I didn't sigh nearly as loud as if it had been my DSLR. Thanks MCM for providing such an economical and useful video solution.

      A lot for a little

      Overall: 4.5 out of 5

This camera is a lot of camera and gear for the money. It is fun and a great way to get yourself going with "go pro" type videoing. Frankly, I was truly amazed at how well this camera works and with all the mounting accessories included. The quality is excellent. It is easy and intuitive to use. I recommend the model that lets you operate it from your smartphone as that let's you put it places you can't actually be (drones, poles, vehicles, animals, under water, etc.) then monitor and operate it remotely. Not a huge range but good for my purposes.

I live on the Fox River so immediately tested the underwater capabilities. Put it on a pro microphone "fish pole" and dunked it off the dock. The fish pole also let's me shoot through the trees above and at events to pan across the heads of an audience. Once you get going with it, you'll have plenty of your own ideas. Technically, I'm mixing this with 1080HD footage shot with a SonyPro cam. No, it is not indistinguishable from that footage, but used to shoot the right things at the right time and brought into the edit with effects and frames, I can show things I could not be shooting with my big camera. I use it like a spice in cooking. Just enough to add some interest and flavor. Yes, it does record sound but this is more about the visuals. When I want great sound to sync with images I'll use a small TEAC digital recorder with appropriate mic. then sync them at edit. Works great. Have fun with it. Record in your car. Pin it on your cap when going hiking or biking. This is also a great gift! I'm Bob Sandidge, media pro (audio/video/sound) I'm Anne's partner in tech exploration.

The functionality of the camera seems to work fine, but has issues with color balance. I noticed a whole lot of blue in the picture when I used the camera outdoors and had to use an editing software package to make the video usable. A white balance control would be a nice feature for this product. I was hoping the company would come out with a firmware upgrade to help compensate for the problem.

      Wi-fi failed

Worked well for what it is going 11 months until Wi-Fi failure. Suddenly intermittent connections with error messages and iSmart software errors on my Android phone. "Connection to camera failed, ...." "newwork is abnormal, is reconnecting.." BTW, "newwork" is the actual spelling. Tried with a second phone, same results.

      Not a GoPro

When I received this, it certainly looked like a factory sealed, never opened box. When I opened it I found all the parts with that protective clear plastic film that is supposed to be removed. Strange thing, after removing the film, I found that the lens window of the waterproof housing was scratched. There were also watermarks on the rest of the housing. It seems that they packed returned parts as new parts. Also, there were two housing backs, one attached to the housing, the other separate. I tested the picture quality and it appeared grainy. I took a 6 megapixel picture with my Canon camera with maximum compression and I took a 5 megapixel pic with this camera. The 6 MP pic used up 1.1 megabytes and this camera used 1.3 megabytes. Even though my Canon compressed the file more, it had a clear picture when viewing at 1:1 on my computer. This camera looked grainy and pixelated at 1:1. Further zooming made the difference very obvious. The 5 megapixel pic it took looked something like a 0.3 megapixel pic. My phone takes much better pics and video. They all are .jpg. Here is another note: someone else said the picture looked blue. That will happen if the white balance is set to incandescent. That can be changed that but you need to use the WiFi and a phone. It is not in the camera's on screen menu.

WiFi keeps rejecting the password. 1234567890 is what the manual and others say works, but the camera keeps rejecting it. Too bad, I wanted to try remote control. I haven't transferred images/video to my PC yet for viewing as I am setting it up as a Christmas gift. Seems like my camera is defective. I purchased 4, so now I shall have to test them all before Christmas as they are all gifts. :(

Not a bad little camera for indoor vids and photos, but videos have a blue hue in bright sunlight with no available program or camera adjustments.

Just received mine, I got it on sale for $50. Video is good quality, camera seems to be well-made, and the selection of mounts and holders is awesome. Can't beat it for the money.

It took me a few minutes to figure out how to access the wi-fi; you have to turn the camera's wi-fi on, then go to the "settings" menu of your device and connect manually with the camera using the password shown on the instruction sheet (1234567890).

GoPro type camera for the rest of us.

      Overall: 4.5 out of 5
      Value:
      Quality:

Working class people don't often have an extra 500 bucks to put down on a hobby camera, so if you wanted a GoPr** cam but balked at the price, then this one might do the trick for you. The most commonly used pictures, relatively easy to use. Wifi from my android phone was remarkable. Kinda freaked me out, to be honest. Live video from the cam to the tablet (or phone) full cam control as well. Nice.
The reviewer who was unable to get the wifi to work may have overlooked the part of the instructions where you are told to "connect your phone to Sport Cam 8" wifi service. That is the wifi that this tiny cam puts up as an access point. You connect to that after you've downloaded the app and installed it. So you connect to the cam's wifi with your phone, then start the app up and it will automatically connect to your cam and you'll be up and running.
I missed that the first time through reading the directions. Hope this helps someone. The cam has a plug for mini USB to download images to your computer, which is pretty fast. It has an HDMI output plug as well.
And get this, it comes with more mounting stuff than you'll ever use. Cables, power adapters, tripod mounts (standard 1/4"-20) and tons of other stuff for handlebars, kites, dirigibles, submarines, you name it, it's got something in there to stick the camera to it. Well, maybe not birthday cakes, but you can make your own rig for that. I'm glad I bought it, and I'm rather demanding of products. If something changes my mind, I'll tell ya.

Images are sharp with wide angle view. built in screen has good resolution for such a tiny size. comes with all the attachments you could ever need. my only gripe: I cant get the WiFi to work. doesnt seem to have WiFi although the camera says right on the front. WIFI. Instructions no help. Would be nice to see on a bigger screen and have remote capability.!!!!
