Ok, but could be a lot better

    Overall: 2 out of 5

This is in some ways an upgrade from the Audio Select 8" coax. It comes with a grill, and the larger coil and paper cone* should handle more power. SQ is decent (with a little EQ) and the speaker is "cleaner" (less air noise and buzzes) on the low end than the Audio Select 8" coax.

On the down side, the grill on this 8" does not protect the tweeter and midrange at all, and has large openings in front of the cone. So insects can get in easily. In addition, the protective felt piece around the tweeter (pole) mount is of necessity (as opposed to a small rubber "spider" such as is used on the Audio Select 8" coax) spaced a bit apart from that pole mount, so most anything can get in there, and potentially into the voice coil gap. (Rattle, buzz...) On my units I stretched cloth grill material over the mid & tweeter module, and added aluminum wire screening to the "open" areas in the grill over the woofer cone. The wire screens were VERY tedious to do right, and this would obviously void the warranty!!

The overall design is such that it would be quite difficult to add an aftermarket grill.

Another problem was that some of the tinsel leads where they run from the main input terminals to the cone body pulled tight on strong positive excursions. I was able to repair this, but geez...

One of the screws holding the tweeter module into the overall assembly was a bit loose.

*I'm not sure what a "poly-mica" coated paper cone is. Some sort of "paint"? A thin film laminated onto the front of the cone? At any rate, the cone is NOT moisture / humidity resistant from the rear. A drop of water on the back eventually soaks in.

Neither this speaker nor the Audio Select 8" coax are available in 8 ohms, which is a serious liability given many of the prospective uses. Probably, it'd be easier for MCM to "fix" the Audio Select 8" coax and then get an 8 ohm version made. But, it'd be nice to get an upgrade to a 1.5" coil, too.

If you have the room this is the speaker!

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I was tired of listening to my flat sounding 8 inch full range speakers and decided to give these a try as they were on sale. The speakers I replaced were 8 ohms opposed to these which are 4 ohms each. I immediately noticed an increase in my sound volume due to my amp putting out more power at 4 ohms. The bass was deeper and the mids and highs were noticeably clearer. I touched them up a bit with the EQ and dialed in the sound I wanted. You will still need a sub if you want earth shaking bass but these are a good start. They also come with speaker grills.
