  The frequency response specifications on paper (60-10KHZ) might lead one to think that this might be a good musical instrument speaker. I bought this product for use in a Behringer V5 tube amp which had a lifeless OEM speaker. Unfortunately, the MCM 8 inch aluminum cone woofer has too much coloration on the higher frequencies and a very harsh breakup, especially when reproducing anything but a very clean signal. Using a sustainer or distortion device in the signal chain results in nasty, buzzy metallic overtones. The aluminum cone is also less efficient than a paper cone, so the volume level was noticeably lower. Where the product shines, however, is in the reproduction of clean bass frequencies--this speaker sounded great when I tried running a bass through the amplifier. However, an 8 inch bass-only amp seems to be a fairly limited use niche item. Bottom line, this wasn't what I was looking for.

  Years ago, on a whim, I ordered these from MCM to use as a dedicated midrange in a 15" 3-way project. I crossed them over at 500 Hz and 3,500 Hz with a 12 dB per octave filter, a crossover that I designed and built myself. WOW! The midrange was as clear and articulate as I have ever heard without a trace of shrillness or coloration! So good was the quality of sound that I just had to sit back and laugh. I am a speaker builder who builds speakers and sells them as a hobby; It took me about 5 minutes to sell them to a customer! He was absolutely amazed! I would recommend using this size box for this application: I.D.= 8.25" wide X 8.25" high X 9.75" deep. 100% of internal volume should be loosely stuffed with a quality batting material. You truly won't be sorry to use this driver in this application. And it's smooth enough to cross over as high as 4,000 Hz! TRY THIS SPEAKER!................
