    Simply Amazing

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I ordered a pair of these woofers by mistake. When I looked at the suspension on the speaker I thought there is no way these things are going to be able to give me the bottom end I have been searching for, for years. But I was wrong. I consider myself an audiophile, and I find it amazing what this $31.00 driver can do. These puppies hammer out deep, rich bass you can FEEL. I have since bought 8 more of them.. I put them in 4 vintage Design Acoustics D-6 speaker cabinets and am pushing 250 RMS watts through each one with 2 ADA ( Audio Design Associates ) PF-2501 amplifiers, and they handle the cleanly. Amazing $31.00 driver.

    Great Speaker

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I'm actually using this speaker as the "high frequency" half for a bass guitar speaker. Crossed over at 800Hz, it plays it's part very well. Very solid speaker.

    10" Die Cast Pro Woofer

    Overall: 5 out of 5

Wow! I bought a Gallien Kreuger Backline 210 Combo Amp and the speakers were lousy. Any note from E1 (41.2 Hz) to A1 (55 Hz) buzzed like a saw. A pair of these 10" woofers made the buzz a faint memory and they are astounding, especially for the price! I just bought a GK 700 MkII 2-10 combo for more oomph, and I will replace the 2 10" speakers with these as soon as I can. HIGHLY recommended!

    One hit home run!!!

    Overall: 5 out of 5

Repairing an old pair of frog, monitor/side fill cabs and with my crown d-150 just sounds awesome. The way the frogs cabs are designed the drivers need to strong and even aggressive to get the full rich sound out of these cabinets. These drivers deliver exactly that. I even miss ordered an extra set. Well I do not need them but they are such a good replacement speaker I will keep them too. If you need a speaker with great quality and sound give these a serious look. These are going to be the go to speakers for me. I have enjoyed rebuilding these cabs with MCM standing by me with all the right replacement parts and equipment that I needed, even in cold & icy weather. Thank you MCM!

    Thank you

Excellent in a single 10" Bass Cab

    Overall: 5 out of 5

The reviews looked promising, so I ordered this 55-2981 and it arrived promptly today. I dropped it into a small 10" PA cab i use with my 6-string bass for trio jazz gigs, and gigged with it tonight. Wow... I'm amazed by the depth, clarity and volume. It handles the low B beautifully, low notes spread and sustain in a beautiful organic way, and chords sound guitar-like. I basically doubled the timbral range and volume of this little generic cab. The price is unbeatable and the quality rivals big-name bass cab speakers, easily. You've got a new loyal customer.

    Quality Woofer

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I have a set of DJ/PA boxes with 10" woofers and 3"x7" piezo tweeters. When i first hooked them up i wasn't satisfied with the bass response from the 10" woofer, so i ordered the 55-2981 diecast 10" woofers and WOW! What a difference in bass response. They now handle my 150 watt amp with the bass all the way up. The boxes where only .8 cubic feet so i used a good amount of polyfill. I finely have a quality set of DJ/PA speakers thanks to the 55-2981's. Awesome woofers

Rugged and well built driver! Excellent value, but the specs are different than published

    Overall: 4 out of 5

These are well built heavy duty drivers, and for the price these are a superb value! I suspect that the OEM who made the 298x series also made MCM's 299x series as the components (and my DATS woofer tester results versus published T/S parameters) have many similarities. As with the 299x series the suspension is significantly tighter (smaller VAS figure even after break-in) than what is published which i was pleased with because my cabinet design actually preferred a lower VAS figure, HOWEVER there is an issue with a lack of motor strength (The same issue that my four 55-2992s have) .... My measured Thiele Small Parameters are as follows: RE(DCR) = 6.5 ohms......... FS= 57.87hz ........ QTS=.861 .........QES= 1.153 .........QMS=3.401.....LE=.58 (10khz) ..... MMD= 37.18 .....VAS= 31.998 ...... SPL= 89.13 @1W/1M (would improve with higher motor strength) ...... BL factor = 9.15 ........... I wrote to MCM about my observations and I hope they will request that their OEM begin using higher grade ferrite rings soon (something like y35 grade or higher) because as soon (or if) they make that minor manufacturing update these drivers (and the 299x series) will be absolute "game changing" low dollar yet high performance values like nothing the world of Pro Audio has ever seen!! ....... In the meantime these drivers (as they are) with current specs will work reasonably well and create a nice deep tone in quarter wave based enclosure types with little to no expansion such as a 40hz tuned Tapped Pipe (AKA transflex/Air coupler) or a "TL" (quarter wave pipe) tuned to 35hz to 40hz ........................ Another (and even simpler) option would be a sealed enclosure but expect a much higher F3 (will produce great midbass but will have a lack of deep bass in a sealed box)..

    Fabulous in an Open Baffle!

    Overall: 5 out of 5

Have 2 per channel in and open baffle powered by a Yung plate amp with 6db boost combined with a Tang Band 4" bamboo full-range. I'm totally astonished at the value and performance of these woofers and the system in general.

Clean, tight and fast. Highly recommended!!!

    Exceptional loudspeaker

    Overall: 5 out of 5

    MCM Part #: 55-2981
I recently purchased two of these guys for use as woofers in a two way high fidelity system, in which the crossover is 2nd order at 200 hz. The upper register is handled by an 8 inch high end coaxial purported to have a response to 22 kHz.
The units purchased were given a gruelling series of tests, pushing them to their limit while measuring voice coil temperature rise and the like. I was quite impressed at the handling of sine wave signals of the order of 13 hz and diaphragm excursions of 6.5 mm. Under those conditions, voice coil temperatures rise PDQ (pretty darned quick). While that can be considered unrealistic, I have seen the results of speakers that were overdriven to the point of excessive voice coil temperatures resulting in smoke and flame which had to be quite an exciting event. While that may seem out of place here, it is considered to be a testimonial to this speaker. The temperature of the coil was taken from ambient (80F) to 130F in less than a minute. The purpose was to determine the rise in coil resistance and its effect on the alignment. The result of that experiment is far beyond the scope of this review. Suffice it to say, the little fella handled it very well. I'm considering buying 2 more as the sale price is way too good. May even go for 4 if I can't find anything else to add to get past the minimum requirement for free shipping.

A note on the stuffing. This can be ambiguous as light, medium and heavy are relative and/or subjective. None of the test equipment I use has ears.

And a note on cabinet bracing. Three mutually perpendicular braces are recommended. Top to bottom, side to cide and front to back, screwed or bolted and glued at the point of intersection and well glued and screwed to the panels. Ya don't want them creaking loose. Use pine or similar stock of at least 1.25 inches square. It is extra work but the result can be quite rewarding. Cabinet panels vibrate and generate sounds of their own. While this is undesireable for high fidelity uses, a musician might find that this gives the sound for which he/she has been looking. The unique sound of a Stradivarius is mostly the result of the wood used to make the instrument and probably unknown to Stradivarius at the time he purchased the wood. To my knowledge, it had never been duplicated.

    Three alignments are given below.

Vented enclosure - optimum flat response for high fidelity.
This gives the smoothest (flattest) response which may not be desireable for musicians.

Volume: 2.8 ft^3; light to medium stuffing; minimum vent dimensions for Xmax: 3.5" dia. by 3.0" long. or for a more convenient diameter of 4.0", the length becomes 4.63" (4 5/8)

The cabinet is tuned for f3 (3 dB knee) at 34 hz. (knee is the 3 dB down point)

The response is close to flat from 44 hz with a slight rise peaking at 1.2 dB at 70 hz between 44 hz and 125 hz.

An optional alignment for more bass output at the expense of raising the low frequence limit.

Volume: 1.1 ft^3; light to medium stuffing; minimum vent diensions for Xmax: 4.5" dia. by 9.625" long.
Since this alignment limits the ultra low end, Xmax can be limited a little by using the following vent.
    Diameter: 4.0" length: 7.162" (7 5/32)

The cabinet is tuned for f3 (3dB knee) at 54 hz.
The response rises slightly to 3.5 dB at 60 hz between 89 hz and 250 hz. That's the added punch some musicians like.

This third alignment is for a closed (sealed) cabinet. It is optimised for a Qtc of 0.707 for optimum damping of the diaphragm. (tight bass) The tradeoff is low frequency output.

    Volume: 1.0 ft^3 Qtc: 0.707 f3: 67 hz. Medium to heavy stuffing.

There is no bump in the response. It is flat to 115 hz and drops slowly to -3dB at 67hz. At 51hz, it's -6dB. If the coals aren't being shoveled into the speaker, a slight bass boost can applied. Keep in mind that 6 dB is a power factor of 4:1; 3 dB is 2:1.

Best choice for Bass Guitar Cab

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I use these speakers over and over for bass guitar cabinets. My customers can't understand how I can give them such a great cabinet for the money? It's because these speakers outperform other speakers costing three times as much or more. Can't beat them and I have tried. Check the spec's, great, great, great!

    Great speaker...

    Overall: 4.5 out of 5

I bought four of these to try in an acoustic 410 cabinet for bass and was totally blown away by the sound these guys produced. Nice and tight bass response and clear as a bell mids..the high end came up a little short but a small amount of eq took care of that. In fact the only draw back I could find was they dont have a 4ohm version of this same speaker (wish list) so I could try them in my ampeg cabinets. (reason for only 4stars for features) I would definitely recommend these if 8ohm is all you need... you wont find a better bass speaker for the money

Bass guitar driver of the century!

    Overall: 5 out of 5

I recently bought a pair of these for use in a ported 2x10 bass guitar setup, and they were outstanding for this application! With no EQ, the tone is balanced and subdued, with the speaker providing very little voicing to the sound. This is very much unlike 10"ers from Eminence, which have that characteristic inflated midrange bump that barks at you. Not a sound I nor my clients are looking for. Put a medium-sized loudness EQ onto these, though, and the results are much different. These woofers transform into aggressive, deep, heavy things, with deep, deep lows and aggressive, angry midrange. No, they don't reach up as high into the midrange as bona-fide "bass guitar" drivers, but in my eyes, that's a good thing. They trade bloated sensitivity and nasally mids for heavy, thick tone. As far as the sheer bass performance is concerned, these are winners. Real low E is achieved, with extension well into the 5-string range. They love power, and they love the bass knob turned up. That said, it wasn't all a perfect experience. I did get a bad one, had a buzz at 80hz at volume. Luckily for me, MCM customer service is second to none, they sent me out a replacement with no return, no questions asked. Thanks MCM! Keep offering killer products and killer service, and I'll keep coming back. You guys never let me forget why I'm a reseller.
